Tourism is the main source of income for the Maldives providing essential work for local people. Its turquoise seas have made the myriad of islands into some of the world’s water sport hubs. The white-sand beaches have leant themselves naturally to creating the perfect location for some of the most exclusive resorts in the world, as well as plenty for people on a more modest budget. The Maldives also make the perfect destination for a special occasion, such as an anniversary or perhaps a honeymoon.

A holiday to the Maldives also offer fantastic opportunities to explore the coral reefs in a pristine setting, and you could even help support one of the coral protection projects supported by resorts in the Maldives.

The capital Male is an interesting place to visit, and to enjoy some of the local culture, dance and food, including trying the Maldivian dish garughiya, a fish broth served with rice, lime and chilli, or mas huni, shredded smoked fish with grated coconut and onions.

Alternatively, why not learn how to dive in the Maldives, and then go swimming with the sharks that patrol these tepid waters. Alternatively, just chill out and relax on the beach before sampling some cocktails as the sun sets upon the horizon to bring a close to yet another day in paradise on your luxury Maldives holidays.

Explore the oceans

One of the more unusual experiences is to swim with hammerhead sharks at Hammerhead Point (or Rasdhoo Madivaru) in the Rasdhoo Atoll. Descend to 30 metres in the deep blue sea and observe their feeding frenzy. Only be careful not to be too critical of their eating habits. Alternatively, you can always go swimming with whale sharks – the world’s largest fish – in the Ari Atoll. If you don’t know how to dive already, then the Maldives makes for a great – and warm – place to learn how to dive without a wetsuit. Most resorts can arrange courses run by professional staff to the highest international safety standards.

Find your own paradise

Away from the water, you can become a castaway in luxury. Whichever resort you choose to stay at during your Maldives holidays, they are bound to offer you a castaway experience. The resort staff will take you by a traditional dhoni sailboat and drop you off on your own deserted island with pre-arranged picnic, and then return to pick you up long before your facial growth has reached Tom Hanks proportions.

The Culture

To immerse yourself more with the local culture, you could always stay in a guest house rather than a luxury resort for a few days. There you can interact with Maldivians, eat the local cuisine and even go fishing with them. The further away you are from the capital Male then the more authentic your local experience will be. The cultural highlight of a Maldives holiday must be experiencing a bodu beru dance and drum performance, whether in your resort or perhaps in Male. Watch the all-male drummers increase the tempo until the dramatic climax as the performers enter into a trance like state
