Itinerary

Overlooking Lake Ontario, cosmopolitan Toronto is regarded as one of the world’s most liveable cities. It’s also the ideal launch point for a road trip around eastern Canada. Your Quebec itinerary begins at the swish Ritz-Carlton Toronto, which is centrally located so you can head straight out and explore this culture-rich city.

Immerse yourself in Toronto’s many sights on a private tour today. Explore the contemporary art spaces and hip bars on the waterfront, or catch a ferry over to the tranquil Toronto Islands. The world-class Royal Ontario Museum and a ride to the top of the CN Tower are not to be missed. You’ll also eat like a king (or queen) in Toronto, which is renowned for its ethnically diverse restaurants.

Collect your hire car and strike out past vineyards and orchards along the shores of Lake Ontario. Visit Niagara-on-the-Lake, one of the best preserved 19th-century towns in North America. Armed with an Adventure Pass, you can witness mighty Niagara falls from multiple angles. Trek the White Water Walk along Niagara Gorge, or get soaked in the cascade’s spray on a cruise. Return to Toronto in the evening.

Head north through Ontario’s cottage country towards Algonquin Park today. Don’t miss a boat trip on the sublime Muskoka Lakes, a series of 900 satin smooth lakes scattered throughout the forest.

Maple-strewn hills, rocky ridges and innumerable lakes, Algonquin Park is like a distillation of Canada’s rugged wilderness. Explore the park’s rugged hiking trails, or take a canoe out on one of its many lakes. You may even spot the resident wild moose, wolf or black bear. We recommend an hour or two in the Algonquin Logging Museum, which offers a fascinating insight into Canada’s historic forestry industry.

It’s time to say farewell to Algonquin Park and head to Canada’s capital. Famous for its Gothic architecture, world-class museums and European-style cafe culture, Ottawa has a unique charm of its own. Your home for the next two nights is the landmark Fairmont Chateau Laurier. Also known as Ottawa’s Castle, this historic downtown hotel is steps away from the Parliament Buildings, the National Arts Centre and Sparks Street Mall.

Today’s private tour offers an overview of Canada’s historic capital. You’ll learn about its people, history and landmarks which form this important world capital. Highlights include the National War Memorial, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Prime Minister’s Offices. Swing by Sparks Street, the Bank of Canada and Parliament Hill, and explore the vibrant Rideau Canal district or shop at the ByWard Market Square.

It’s time to head north across the border into Quebec province and plunge deep into the mighty Laurentian mountain range. The lively alpine hub of Mont Tremblant is renowned for its skiing and high-octane sports. Test your wits hiking and biking its vertiginous trails, or sample the many kayaking, horse riding or whitewater rafting excursions on offer. You can even soar above this resplendent mountain range on a helicopter tour.

Hit the road again and drive north along St Lawrence River to Quebec City. Stop off in Trois Rivieres, an historic lakefront city founded in 1634. Quebec City is North America’s only walled city and blends Canadian flair with a chic European vibe. One of the city’s most striking features is the Gothic facade of the Fairmont Chateau Frontenac, your home for the night.

Soak up Quebec’s old-world charm on a guided walk through the cobbled streets and city walls of Vieux Quebec. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, its landscaped parks, monuments and museums are entwined with quirky artisan shops, upmarket restaurants and chichi cafes. The tour explores the city’s architecture, important events and famous people. It also takes in the Citadel and Musee Royal 22e Regiment, the Quebec Fortifications and Place Royale.

It’s time to wave goodbye to Quebec City and follow the flow of the St Lawrence River south to Montreal. There’s a real buzz to this bohemian, culture-rich city. A blend of Europe and North America, it promises elegant architecture, a lively nightlife and an exciting food scene. Boutique hotel, Le Saint Sulpice in Old Montreal, is a perfect base to explore the city.

Step out of the hotel and you’re in the heart of historic Old Montreal. Visit the Gothic Notre Dame Basilica, just moments from the hotel. Reminiscent of the famous Paris cathedral, it’s one of the great religious architectural masterpieces of North America. Dip into the chic cafes of the French Quarter, explore the Olympic Stadium and enjoy panoramic views of the city from the leafy peaks of Mont Royal.

For a blast from the past, head south to Upper Canada Village, a living museum depicting life in the 1860s. At Gananoque, you’ll embark on a 1000 Island cruise around the forested outcrops scattered across the St Lawrence River. Stop off in Kingston, at the confluence of the river and Lake Ontario, once the capital of Canada. Visit Kingston Mills Lock to see boats being raised a staggering 14 metres.

The next morning, head to Peterborough, home to the world’s highest lift locks. Watch as it hauls pleasure craft and the water they float in up to a height of 20 metres. Drop in at the Peterborough Lift Lock Visitor Centre, before hitting the road for the scenic drive back to Toronto.

Today your Quebec itinerary draws to its conclusion. Head to the airport for your return flight home.
